Strengthening Safety Amid Rising Concerns
New York City is making significant strides in mitigating the dangers associated with lithium-ion batteries, particularly in e-bikes. The city has initiated a multifaceted strategy aimed at protecting residents and workers by introducing a certified e-bike trade-in program alongside robust public safety campaigns. This initiative, part of Mayor Eric Adams’ Charge Safe, Ride Safe action plan, comes in response to the increased safety concerns surrounding uncertified lithium-ion batteries.
Impact of Lithium-Ion Battery Fires
Recent statistics show a slight uptick in lithium-ion battery-related fires, jumping from 268 incidents in 2023 to 277 in 2024. Yet, there’s a glimmer of hope: fatal incidents have dramatically decreased from 18 in 2023 to just 6 in 2024, marking a remarkable 67% drop. This decline reflects the city’s ongoing efforts to enhance safety measures, though recent tragedies remind us of the ongoing risks these batteries pose.
Responding to Tragedy with Action
The urgency of this initiative was underscored by the recent death of Fazil Khan, a promising journalist killed in a lithium-ion battery fire in Harlem. The rapid spread of flames forced 22 residents to evacuate, highlighting the critical importance of fire-safe equipment. In response to these incidents, NYC’s Department of Transportation (DOT) has allocated $2 million to the E-Bike Trade-In program aimed at replacing uncertified bikes with safe, compliant alternatives. Each participating delivery worker will receive one certified e-bike and two UL-certified batteries, reinforcing compliance with safety standards.

In addition to the trade-in program, the city is ramping up community awareness campaigns focused on the dangers posed by uncertified batteries. These initiatives are designed to educate users on safe charging practices and the importance of using certified products to prevent future tragedies.
