A Jewel in the Heart of New York’s Jazz Scene
High above West 27th Street, within an unassuming office building, lies The Jazz Gallery, a cherished venue that has profoundly influenced New York City's jazz landscape for over three decades. This year marks its 30th anniversary, and the celebration promises to be vibrant with the inaugural NoMad Jazz Festival coming up on August 9-10.
A Vision for Community
Janet Luhrs, the Executive Director since 2013, shares, "Bringing the music outside the walls of our venue and into the community has always been a dream of ours." The festival, in collaboration with The NoMad Alliance and other partners, aims to unite the community through the dynamic spirit of jazz.
The Legacy of The Jazz Gallery
Founded in 1995 by celebrated trumpeter Roy Hargrove, vocalist Lezlie Harrison, and anthropologist Dale Fitzgerald, The Jazz Gallery has nurtured talents like Vijay Iyer and Ambrose Akinmusire. Luhrs emphasizes that a gig at The Jazz Gallery is seen by many emerging artists as a significant milestone in their careers.
Innovation and Resilience
During the pandemic, The Jazz Gallery showcased its resilience by pivoting to live-streaming, extending its reach to over 50 countries and maintaining community ties through music. "Our adaptability kept us connected and relevant," Luhrs noted, further solidifying the venue's role in New York's cultural fabric.
The NoMad Jazz Festival
The upcoming festival is anticipated to be a joyous public celebration featuring a range of talented musicians, from seasoned artists to rising stars. With no ticket costs, the festival aims to foster accessibility and invite everyone to experience live jazz as it was meant to be enjoyed.
Celebrate and Connect Through Jazz
As The Jazz Gallery embarks on this milestone year, it illustrates that jazz is more than just music—it’s a collective experience that creates connection and community. Luhrs emphasizes that the festival is about more than jazz; it’s about bringing people together. Expect performances that resonate with the heart and soul of New York City.
