Big Endorsements Shift Gears in Manhattan’s 12th Congressional Race
In an electrifying twist in the race for New York's highly coveted 12th Congressional District, East Side Assembly member Alex Bores has secured a crucial endorsement from DC 37, the city’s largest public sector union, further intensifying an already fierce contest. This endorsement arrives as the race gears up to fill the shoes of the retiring Congressman Jerry Nadler. With Micah Lasher and Jack Schlossberg hot on his heels, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Bores.
What the Union Endorsement Means
The endorsement from DC 37, representing over 150,000 essential city workers including teachers and EMS personnel, underscores Bores’ commitment to issues important to working families. Henry Garrido, Executive Director of District Council 37, emphasized, “DC 37 workers deserve a representative in Congress who takes that seriously,” remarking that Bores has consistently shown up when it matters most.
A Tough Battle Ahead
Despite Bores’ boosted visibility, the race remains a nail-biter. Recent polling indicates a razor-thin margin where Bores leads at 20%, closely followed by Lasher at 19% and Schlossberg at 18%. This statistical tie shows that about one-third of voters are still undecided, highlighting the volatility of the race.
Countering Attacks—Bores Focusing on Policy
Compounding Bores’ challenges, he faces significant pushback from the anti-Bores attack ads funded by the Leading for the Future Super PAC. With $2.3 million already spent against him, the Bores camp is now facing a media landscape fraught with challenges. His push for the RAISE Act—designed to regulate the AI industry—has put him at odds with powerful tech interests, but also positions him as a candidate concerned with ensuring public safety and responsible governance.
The Landscape of Uncertainty
With endorsements from political heavyweights and the media spotlight shining on Jack Schlossberg, a politically inexperienced candidate with a well-known lineage, the race is undeniably competitive. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s endorsement has further bolstered Schlossberg’s momentum, leading some analysts, like Tom Allon, to underscore various strategic strengths among the main contenders. Bores’ tech-savvy background, Lasher’s established networks, and Schlossberg’s familial clout create a dynamic electoral battlefield, charmed yet chaotic.
The 12th Congressional District, often referred to as the most Democrat-inflected area in New York, promises to flip the script in November’s elections. As we move closer to the June 23 primaries, the positioning of these candidates will indeed be pivotal in shaping the future of Manhattan representation in Congress.
